Frank Murphy

Board Title & Responsibilities:  Points Coordinator
First Year and total number of years served on board:  FWRC member since 2014. Joined board in 2017.
Are you solo or do you have a favorite group of running buddies?  I often run solo, but enjoy running with friends as schedules permit. When running in a group, I train with Fort Wayne's Smallest Winner contestants, Fort4Fitness training groups, Tuesday Lindenwood/O's Wild Bunch and the IGNITE Ultra team.
Most Memorable Running Experience?  I have many memorable moments. Perhaps my most rewarding running accomplishment was finishing my first half marathon (Fort4Fitness 2013). It was the culmination of a lot of hard work as a contestant in Fort Wayne's Smallest Winner.
Why do you volunteer with the Running Club?  I was a contestant in Fort Wayne's Smallest Winner (2013) and lost 88 lbs in 27 weeks. This free program is staffed by many volunteers who make it all work. After completing the FWSW training, I volunteer to return the investment made in me. Without the help of so many volunteers, I would not have adapted a healthy, active lifestyle.
What does running mean to you?  Running is a great way to challenge myself. I like attempting to do hard things. Sometimes I win. Sometimes I don't. Either way, I learn a lot about myself in the process.

First Year and total number of years served on board:  I joined the board January 2013
Are you solo or do you have a favorite group of running buddies?  I equally enjoy the quiet time of running alone to clear my head and the group runs such as Wednesday nights at 3 Rivers Running Company or Tuesday nights at Lindenwood that help keep me motivated and on track. When I transitioned to more ultra trail running in 2015 it became for important to run with a group for support and encouragement during longer distances.
Most Memorable Running Experience?  2008 Fort 4 Fitness Half –Marathon. It was the 1st Fort 4 Fitness Half and my first Half, I had a goal of finishing in 2 hours and when I finished in 1:56.09 I was hooked
Why do you volunteer with the Running Club?  The local running community was very welcoming and helpful to me when I first started running. Being a board member allows me to give back and help others.
What does running mean to you?  I started running 15 years ago for health reasons, the wellness benefits & sense of accomplishment is what keeps me going

Are you solo or do you have a favorite group of running buddies?  My daughter and I participate in events together.
Most Memorable Running Experience?  I really enjoyed the Indy Mini 5k because Indianapolis is my hometown but my most memorable event was the New Haven 10k because I met some personal goals with that race.
Why do you volunteer with the Running Club?  I enjoy volunteering my time in support of activities I enjoy.
What does running mean to you?  I'm less of of runner and more of a dedicated walker. I walk to stay healthy and to share the company of my daughter and others with similar interest.

Are you solo or do you have a favorite group of running buddies?  I usually run solo, but when I do run with someone it is usually my wife.
Most Memorable Running Experience?  Every time I achieve something new, it is a new memorable experience. My first 10k, my first half, my first marathon, my first triathlon... The latest is the first time I completed a half with a sub 2 hour time.
Why do you volunteer with the Running Club?  I discovered that I am a very goal orientated person. The points series races gives me goals through the whole year to keep me working. I always know what races are coming up and what I need to be training for. This keeps me healthy and happy!
What does running mean to you?  I started as a way to lose weight and get my blood pressure down to a safe level. But I discovered that I also do it to challenge myself. I was never athletic so I find it amazing to see the things that my body can do. I also find that it is my stress relief. My running is my time. It is a chance for me to put everything else on hold and just talk to myself, nature, God, whomever I need it.

Are you solo or do you have a favorite group of running buddies?  I have a great group of running buddies but they are much faster me! So sometimes I run with them but I also run alone a lot. I like to do both.
Most Memorable Running Experience?  I have a few but the 2 that are most significant to me are when I ran my first full 5k in 2012. I HATED running all of my life and would never ever do it. I'd always find ways to get out of it. But in 2011 I lost 100+ pounds with diet and walking. Running became a natural progression as I grew stronger and I ran a full 5K in May 2012. The second one would be looking at where I am now. I've had several medical challenges over the last few years but decided 2017 was going to be my comeback year. So once again I ran a full 5K at Runner's on Parade and then I aimed high and completed my first half marathon at Fort for Fitness. I never imagined I would be able to do a half marathon.
Why do you volunteer with the Running Club?  I love the running community in Fort Wayne. I am not originally from Fort Wayne though I have now lived here almost 10 years. Since becoming involved with the running club races in 2016 I have met incredible people that I now call friends. I think our community of runners are some of the most accepting, encouraging and amazing people I have ever met. I am a slow runner, probably a back of the packer, but that has never mattered to our running community. I am part of them. So, I want to continue to give back to the group that welcomed me and made me realize I really am a runner!!
What does running mean to you?  I love the challenge it gives me. As I mentioned with my weight loss, I was a walker and never thought I would become a runner. One day on the treadmill I just decided to see if I could run for one minute. I continued to challenge myself and before I knew it one minute became one mile and then there was no stopping me. I love being able to prove to myself that I can do something I never thought I would be able to do. That's what running does for me.

Are you solo or do you have a favorite group of running buddies?  Bad ass runners
Most Memorable Running Experience?  Finishing my first full marathon at F4F 2016
Why do you volunteer with the Running Club?  The running club provided/provides with the support I needed to obtain a desired level of success when I first started my journey. Now it's time to give something back to the running community.
What does running mean to you?  Mental and physical health with the opportunity to meet and share time with like minded and amazing people.

Are you solo or do you have a favorite group of running buddies?  You can find me running by myself, occasionally frequenting the Wednesday Night run group at TRRC, the local underground training group or scaring random people along the greenway around IPFW.
Most Memorable Running Experience?  Convincing a friend to run outside with me, who always loathed running inside, and seeing the excitement in their eyes when they told me how much fun running outside really is.
Why do you volunteer with the Running Club?  I would like to give back to the community using the skills I have developed in my professional life for the benefit of others.
What does running mean to you?  It provides the peace and tranquility that we so often miss in our daily lives.

Beverly Murphy

Cataloging Manager at the Allen County Public Library

Board Title & Responsibilities:  Board member. I attend our monthly Board meetings and volunteer at most all of the Points races. I am a member of the Club’s picnic and Banquet committees. I update the club’s tri-fold board and marketing table for presentation at our managed races and other pertinent events.
First Year and total number of years served on board:  I joined the Board in 2015. This (2018) is year 4 for me.
Are you solo or do you have a favorite group of running buddies?  Both. My favorite running buddies are my Chaos Sisters. We meet a few times a week to run, when possible. We have a crazy-good time.
Most Memorable Running Experience?  Participating and finishing as a power walker in the inaugural F4F Half Marathon was exciting. It inspired me to continue racing. I wanted to improve my finish times, so I began running.
Why do you volunteer with the Running Club?  I am so happy to be a part of this supportive and encouraging running community. I volunteer because I want to show other local walkers and runners how very much our Club has to offer them. It is very rewarding to hear about their journeys.
What does running mean to you?  Running makes me feel strong in body and mind. Pure joy to my soul.

Sandy Junk

Client Manager / Property & Casualty Insurance

Board Title & Responsibilities:  Board member
First Year and total number of years served on board:  I joined the board mid-way through the year in 2017. I've just been elected to a 2 year term and I look forward to serving.
Are you solo or do you have a favorite group of running buddies?  I enjoy the solo run and runs with friends...depends on my mood and goals. I run with friends a lot so sometimes I need to break those ties so I can prepare for race time when I'm out there all alone.
Most Memorable Running Experience?  Finishing my most challenging race to date...the IT100, 50 miler. It was a cold, rainy day. I was a newbie, probably not trained well enough, and there was mud for days. I really had to dig deep down for that finish and it felt great!
Why do you volunteer with the Running Club?  The local running community has given me so much in ways of friendships, support, community, and health...this is the least that I can do to give back. It's my goal to keep the club relevant and a treasure to it's members.
What does running mean to you?  There are way too many reasons to count! Here are a few: to stay healthy, to get lost for awhile, sense of accomplishment, community support, strengthening friendships, food, and beer.
