Cecil Baker 2017

Cecil Baker

Which Points Race did you enjoy the most and why?  Runners on Parade, Beat Beethoven, Run for Riley.
Which Points Race was the hardest for you and why?  Vineyard Trail, slippen in the mud.
Did you run any non-points races this year, and if so which was your favorite?  The Fort for fitness half marathon, I have ran 7 of them.
Who is your favorite person or group to go for a run with?  First I have to thank Casey Shafer, as he finally convinced me to run with other people and in this IronMan thing? But I was a sprinter (Basketballer, Footballer and track sprinter, I want to win like I have). NO DUDE, I will just train (for my Half or 2 a year, ran 9 half’s so far) run on my own as I am sooooo slow, at distance. OK, OK DUDE, I’LL TRY ONE OF YOUR 5K (What is 5K, 5 miles? lol), I HAD NO CLUE???? SO I attended the 2016 Banquet and listened to Andy Bayer, and Dan Hauling explained how they run with a pack/team of RUNNERS and then I seen all these folks setting around me get up and WITH A SMILE ON THEIR FACES MOVE TOWARD THEIR STAGE, as THESE FOLKS WERE IRONMAN RUNNERS IN 2016!!! SO MY BAR WAS SET, AND THE FANNY FREEZER 2017 (Yes, I froze my arse OFF!) BEGUN MY IRONMAN JOURNEY. SO now WE have been blessed in 2017, as the memories we RUNNERS share will forever NOURISH OUR SOUL AS WE ALL FINISHED THOSE 94.8 MILES, WE OUR THE 2017 TEAM IRONMAN!!!! But it was not easy ( I had a surgery and was carrying 35 extra lbs, so I thought the IronMan would force me to run more than normal and get back to my normal weight, it did not, BUT I RAN ON, and every race had its own challenges’, aches, pain, BUT all these running folks CHEER FOR EVERYONE ( not always in B-Ball , Football, my team is better than yours, my kid is better than your kid) THAT MADE ALL THE DIFFERENCE. I LOVE MY RUNNING BUDS, THANKS FOR THE MANY MEMORIES, LETS MAKE SOME MORE IN LIFE!!!!! Kim Harding and Mary Voors our similar pace allowed us to vent, we talked about life, why we run and the health issues folks deal with as we age, their encouragement, and friendship is greatly appreciated, and we are running buds for life we did it together, not sure if I would of come to SOME races, but didn’t want to let myself and you two down, thank you for being you, you motivated me to the finish. Michelle Erin Lee her friendly personality and smile motivates everyone. Bridget Clements her genetics have roots from my village, my tribe (Back home, I know her Daddy), she is an awesome distance runner she has run 2 Disney Marathons, her nephew runs cross-country at IU , Her friendly attitude and encouragement is appreciated. Lisa Ramirez and her 2 grandsons Austin Ramirez and Devin Brock, fun to run with and laugh at these 2 talented teenagers, now their BAR IS SET, they have to run an IronMan in their fifties or Lisa will clam the best distance athlete of the family!!!! A Teenager mind (please let me be a teenager again, lol), they don’t have a clue; their journey has just begun, looking forward to see where their life’s journey leads them, their legs were like COLTS, RUNNING INTO LIFE!!!! Kelly Barns and Mae, theses 2 running Buds always have a SMILE ON and encourage everyone, Karen and Taylor Louis, great to see a mother and daughter running together. Sherri Konkle, Shelly Brown. Steve and Betty Greider, husband and wife they are still together after 94.8 miles, they our Team Greider. Gerald Cooper and his wife, his father delivered me. Patricia Jedrek-Lehman, Shelly Brown, Benita Browning, Betty Nelson. Joseph, Mindy (Miss Energizer Bunny), Anna and Elliot Kinder, this family is so talented and friendly. These runners I tried to beat in my mind: Roger Kingsbury, Jed Pearson ( My 1st podium with these 2 Great Distance guys, I was miles behind them, in 3rd) , Matthew Herald, Mike Beethoven, Rob Marzzcci , Roger Wilson, Ed Stang, Steve Heim, Jeff Junk, Christian Doak, Barry Peterson, Frank Murphy always encouraging runners, Todd Ernsberger always has something funny to say, Eugene Yoder always out ran me as he didn’t want to STAY AROUND and take my challenge to arm wrestle me AS HE WOULD NOT WIN THAT COMPETITION!!! So I was the reason he won many races, he’s scared of a senior!!!!! Lol The 2017 races would not have been as enjoyable without these runners and volunteers, liz Schloss always giving hugs, smiling and encouraging everyone, Jonathan G. encouragement and pictures are priceless, Bev Murphy will not let you lose your finishing attitude (whooo whooo), Erin Brady her encouraging attitude, Carmen Tse (young Lady) and Dave Broerman (talented artist) this couple is always encouraging and smiling at every runner. The crew/team from TRR, Mike Else, Sam Bird, Blake Harris, Thomas Crum, Brandon Clayton (Puppy, growing a beard is still not helping, you are still a pup!!! lol), Abby (smiles a lot), Paula Henry a Master runner, THE David vs Goliath (give her a can of Black Beans and she will defend herself, until the end! “No Take My BIKE” GGGRRAAAAA . lol). Judy Tillapaugh she is always friendly and encouraging everyone, Kris Adams Sayler (and her Dog) and Molly her running BUD, she ran early in the races but then had a injury, she IS A GREAT MOTIVATOR, I felt for her as I thought one of my old injuries would stop me also, EVERYONE IS soooo sweet along the runs as all these running folks CHEER FOR EVERYONE, I ENJOYED MYSELF IN 2017 BECAUSE OF ALL THE NEW RUNNING BUDS I HAVE NOW YOU-ALL ARE SO PRECIOUS TO ME, I LOVE YOU ALL, SEE YOU ON THE ROAD, Cec Baker…
What do you enjoy most about distance running?  It challenges me to push for more miles every long run.

Which Points Race did you enjoy the most and why?  I enjoyed the parlor city trot half marathon the most because it was a very beautiful and scenic route.
Which Points Race was the hardest for you and why?  The hardest for me was the WOOF. It was the hardest because of the weird terrain and slippery conditions.
Did you run any non-points races this year, and if so which was your favorite?  My favorite was the fantasy of lights. I love the bright lights on the sides while you run.
Who is your favorite person or group to go for a run with?  Austin Ramirez because 1, he is my cousin, and 2, he would try to push me slightly farther than I was running.
What do you enjoy most about distance running?  I enjoy the fact that it clears your head.

Which Points Race did you enjoy the most and why?  My favorite race of the series was the Parlor City half marathon. The weather was perfect and the course was absolutely beautiful throughout the park.
Which Points Race was the hardest for you and why?  The race that was the hardest for me was the WOOF. I struggle with trail races due to a previous ankle injury, so running on trails always makes me nervous.
Did you run any non-points races this year, and if so which was your favorite?  I ran many non-points races this year, such as the Smallest Winner half marathon, Fort for Fitness half marathon, several local 5k & 10k's, as well as training for the Walt Disney World Marathon, which I'll be running in January of 2018. My favorite non-points race was the Bayshore Half Marathon in Traverse City, Michigan. The first few miles are challenging due to hills; however, the course is one of the most beautiful I've ever seen.
Who is your favorite person or group to go for a run with?  I run with several training groups at the Fleet Feet store. I began running with them 4 years ago and have made many friendships throughout the years.
What do you enjoy most about distance running?  My favorite thing about distance running is being able to 'zone out' from everyday life. I especially enjoy running long distances out in the country because of the beautiful scenery. I have competed in 35 half marathons and two full marathons. I enjoy training for longer distances because of the encouragement I receive from friends and family.
Christian Doak 2017

Christian Doak

Which Points Race did you enjoy the most and why?  Pink Ribbon Run was the most enjoyable/meaningful because we lost a dear friend just a few months prior to that horrible disease. Her son and 2 daughters joined us along with several other family members and friends.
Which Points Race was the hardest for you and why?  As much as I'd like to say the Vineyard Trail because of the hills, I think the WOOF was because that's when my hip was bothering me the most. Found out a week or so later that I had a fractured femur and a torn labrum.
Did you run any non-points races this year, and if so which was your favorite?  Several but Fort For Fitness and the Indy mini we're awesome. I grew up downtown Fort Wayne so anytime I can run through neighborhoods where the streets are lined with people cheering and hanging out with their neighbors.
Who is your favorite person or group to go for a run with?  I normally run alone but I have trained with my sister Rita several times and we ran the Indy mini together last spring.
What do you enjoy most about distance running?  I love to run early in the morning. I like to get out before 4am and run the country roads around my house. See and hear lots of animals falling stars and some great full moons.

Which Points Race did you enjoy the most and why?  There were two races that I really enjoyed: Beat Beethoven and the Turkey Trot. I thought the idea and theme behind Beat Beethoven was very fun and unique, the course was beautiful, and it was my first time getting a medal for placing in my age group! For the Turkey Trot, call me crazy, but I had a blast running in the rain and stomping through muddy puddles. It also marked the end of the point races, meaning I had just completed the Ironrunner!
Which Points Race was the hardest for you and why?  I found all three of the longest distance runs to be hard for me, but the Nutri-Run stands out the most. This was my first time running more than a 5k, and on top of struggling with a foot injury, I just wasn't prepared. My last two miles I just wanted to sit on the side of the road and cry, I was in so much pain! I did it though, and I will never forget how proud I was of myself for crossing that finish line.
Did you run any non-points races this year, and if so which was your favorite?  Yes, I ran a bunch of non-points races this year and enjoyed them all! If I had to pick a favorite, I would say it was the Run and Ride 5k and 10k weekend at Cedar Point. Running through the amusement park and beside Lake Erie was amazing. I also got a PR on the 5k!! Getting to enjoy the rides afterwards was also a bonus.
Who is your favorite person or group to go for a run with?  My dad! If it wasn't for him there is no way I could have completed the Ironrunner. He always keeps me motivated, makes running fun, and lets me complain about all my aches and pains to him. I actually got him into running, but now he's the one that keeps me into it. I always joke that I created a monster with the amount of races he signs us up for. There is no better running buddy than my dad!
What do you enjoy most about distance running?  The feeling of accomplishment I get afterwards. It's also the fact that a couple years ago I would have laughed at the idea of distance running, but look at me now! The best part is proving to myself that I can actually do this, and surprisingly enjoy it.

Which Points Race did you enjoy the most and why?  Vineyard Trail 5K because I enjoy trail running and wine.
Which Points Race was the hardest for you and why?  WOOF 16mi, the first 2 loops were fun, but the 3rd was rough. Was the farthest distance for me to-date and I think I just wasn’t prepared.
Did you run any non-points races this year, and if so which was your favorite?  I did a lot and enjoyed most of them, but I think my favorite was the Run-n-Ride weekend at Cedar Point where we did both the 5k and 1/4 Marathon.
Who is your favorite person or group to go for a run with?  No doubt would be my daughter Kathy Gray. She is the one that got me hooked.
What do you enjoy most about distance running?  the challenge both physically and mentally to get out the door no matter the conditions.
Patricia Lehman 2017

Patricia Jedrek-Lehman

Which Points Race did you enjoy the most and why?  I enjoyed the Urban League and the New Haven runs because they were in areas I was not very familiar with and found the people friendly. It was neat to have use of the Jury Park pool after the run as well.
Which Points Race was the hardest for you and why?  Surprise! The WOOF ! Even with doing long runs for training, the terrain and weather meant that the mature runner (i.e. advanced in years) would do well to be careful with every footfall. Even wanting to run faster, it wasn't wise to do so...we ole gals don't mend as easily as young folks.
Did you run any non-points races this year, and if so which was your favorite?  Wrapped up the year with the Honolulu Marathon...it is runner friendly (course doesn't close & lots of fans along the way) and gorgeous views...after the sun comes up. Love the aloha spirit...it seems contagious even among non-Hawaiians. Coming after the FWRC points races and especially the long runs later in the year, it was a good run for me. Also Fort for Fitness is a boon to the community---great to see so many people out!
Who is your favorite person or group to go for a run with?  I usually run alone, love the peace of running outdoors. I often take my frisky Australian Sheepdog along if he can stand to put up with my plodding.
What do you enjoy most about distance running?  I love the serenity of interacting with nature during all seasons and all kinds of weather though I am allergic to rain and ice. The peaceful contemplation that comes with a long run is hard to beat! The health benefits also are hard to beat!
Karen Louis 2017

Which Points Race did you enjoy the most and why?  Beat Beethoven was a great addition to the series this year. It was a fun race and nice course. (I beat Beethoven by the way ;) )
Which Points Race was the hardest for you and why?  JP Jones was a tough one for me this year. Had to deal with high temps that day that my body hadn't adjusted to for the season yet.
Did you run any non-points races this year, and if so which was your favorite?  Fort 4 Fitness of course. Wouldn't miss that one. Love to see all the positive energy in Fort Wayne that day.
Who is your favorite person or group to go for a run with?  I run with a group of seven ladies we call "The Runner Girls". They have been a true blessing in so many more ways than just running. No topic of conversation is off limits when we are doing a long run. The top favorite of my Runner Girls, however, has to be my 12 year old daughter, Taylor. She started running with me at 4 weeks old in a jogger. At about 5 years old she was riding with us on her bike (even getting out of bed for the sunrise runs). In the last two years she started running with us. This year Taylor and I committed ourselves to the Iron Runner series. It has been such a great bonding experience as we pushed each other (sometimes dragged each other) through all 16 races. I have enjoyed seeing her confidence grow and her excitement when she crosses a finish line with a time or distance PR. (She beat Beethoven too by the way ;) )
What do you enjoy most about distance running?  Where do I begin? I enjoy everything about running (except the aches and pains after the super long runs). There is so much more to being a runner than just running. It is my "me" time. It is the spirit of the running community. It is the health and fitness benefits. It is my emotional sanity stabilizer. It is the joy of the finish line. It is the physical challenge. It is the fresh air and the scenery of the trails. It is priceless time with friends. It is the zen. This year especially it has been bonding time with my daughter. I often say I wish I could get everyone to run so they could share in the understanding of why a runner runs.

Which Points Race did you enjoy the most and why?  I enjoyed Beat Beethoven the most because I can push myself to a faster pace and I can see how far I can go at a faster pace than I normally run.
Which Points Race was the hardest for you and why?  The W.O.O.F was definitely the hardest race for me because my legs started hurting really bad after 11 miles and I was 11 at the time. I recently turned 12. We also forgot to put KT tape on my knees so they started hurting very badly.
Did you run any non-points races this year, and if so which was your favorite?  I ran Fort4Fitness this year. This was my favorite because I have been running it since I was 4 or 5 years old and I have so many memories with this race. I also feel like it brings Fort Wayne together as a community.
Who is your favorite person or group to go for a run with?  I like to run with my mom because she always keeps me going when I want to stop. We are known as “Taylor and Taylor’s Mom”. I also like running with Kim Truesdaell because she is very nice and super funny and she is a great running partner.
What do you enjoy most about distance running?  I enjoy running long distances because of the pride I feel after I finish. I also enjoy going back to school (I’m in 6th grade) and everybody is so surprised that I ran like 13.1 or 16 miles.
Connie Turkey Trot 2017-34554

Connie Lubbehusen

Which Points Race did you enjoy the most and why?  I loved the Turkey Trot! It was cold, muddy and the mud was cold. It was the culmination of a season of hard work and the weather was just details. My 8 yr old son decided to run with me and we had determined that if he had trouble I could carry him since he had only run 1 mile with his CC team. However we both underestimated him and he totally smoked me and I couldn't be prouder!
Which Points Race was the hardest for you and why?  The Nutri Run 20K. This was the first long race for me and I didn't anticipate just how exhausted I would be the last few miles. There was a point when I was running along Covington Rd and I looked down at the ditch and thought if only I could get hit by a car, then I could stop running...
Did you run any non-points races this year, and if so which was your favorite?  Winona Lake Optimist sprint triathlon; it was the only tri I did this year since the series took so many weekends. Running is one of my three weakest sports and I was more prepared for the run due to the iron runner series.
Who is your favorite person or group to go for a run with?  I run alone. Everyone I know runs faster than me so even if I had a partner I would probably get left in the dust.
What do you enjoy most about distance running?  I love the finish line.

The sense of accomplishment,I feel so fortunate that God as given me the ability to be able to participate in such a great activity. Beginning with the Wednesday night group many years ago,I have been very lucky to meet many great people who I enjoy running and hanging out with very much ! Thanks to running ,I met my partner for life !!

Which Points Race did you enjoy the most and why?  Mastodon Stomp & Annual Rotary 5k won my age group. New Haven 10k was Dan & I’s first race together as an engaged couple. Vineyard Trail 5k by far the best race it was on our wedding day!
Which Points Race was the hardest for you and why?  The Woof 15 Miler because we ran before the race. We adding extra miles on for the day due to our marathon training plan. It was a cold, wet, and damp day for running, not a good day to run. Turkey Trot 5k I was so sick that race never easy to run when you don’t feel good. It was the last Points race couldn’t not do it but it was tough.
Did you run any non-points races this year, and if so which was your favorite?  Fort4fitness and Rocket City Marathon in Alabama My favorite was Rocket City. I ran it with my husband, his first, which made it very special. It was my 3rd marathon.
Who is your favorite person or group to go for a run with?  Dan McGuire of course, having a running partner for life is amazing. We both enjoy our runs together. We usually don’t talk much on our runs but love that we can be together and enjoy what we love to do RUN ‍♀ .

Which Points Race was the hardest for you and why?  The Woof. That says it all.
Did you run any non-points races this year, and if so which was your favorite?  I ran Mike Else's 5-10-15k series; nut'n but trails; fort4fitness 1/2 marathon; galloping cobbler and gingerbread pursuit. I enjoyed the tree trail challenge at Franke Park the most. It was pouring rain and I love mud!
Who is your favorite person or group to go for a run with?  I like running with friends Benita Browning, Bobbi Muncy and Mary Koher. Also my grandsons Devin Brock and Austin Ramirez who are also ironrunners.
What do you enjoy most about distance running?  I like the challenge of completing a run.

Michelle Regan

Which Points Race did you enjoy the most and why?  I really enjoyed the WOOF. The trails were great and the scenery beautiful.
Which Points Race was the hardest for you and why?  The most difficult race for me was the Parlor City Trot. At mile four I began experiencing intense hamstring pain which made the race physically painful to complete. On top of that, I was mentally preparing to return home (upstate NY) for a family emergency after the race. I spent the majority of the race fighting tears and finding a way to just get it done. As difficult as it was, it was somewhat cathartic and one of the races I'm most proud of, not because of time but because of perseverance. I'm thankful for my friend Kim, who not only waited for me to finish this race but helped me stretch and drove me so that I could rest between the race and heading back to NY.
Did you run any non-points races this year, and if so which was your favorite?  I ran several non-points races this year but my favorites have to be any of the trail races. I had a blast at the DINO trail run at Griffin Park in Terre Haute. This year, I really enjoyed the Nut'n But Trail series--the races were well organized, fun, beautiful, and challenging.
Who is your favorite person or group to go for a run with?  More often than not, I run solo. When schedules allow, I enjoy running, hiking, or working out with Mimi and Jessica. They're the best because they are always there for me--in running and life!
What do you enjoy most about distance running?  I enjoy distance running because I enjoy the challenge. I mostly love the feeling of accomplishing a goal and the pursuit of the next goal. I've also met some wonderful people who, no matter the difference in ability/speed/talent/etc, consistently encourage one another. The camaraderie makes the hardest runs that much easier. Watching others accomplish goals beyond my wildest imagination is inspiring and motivating.

Which Points Race did you enjoy the most and why?  I really enjoyed he WOOF 16 mile. I guess because I'm crazy? :-) No seriously, I probably needed the incentive of it being a points race to sign up, or I wouldn't have done it. But I enjoyed doing long runs on my own to train for it, and always enjoy the quiet and the scenery of trail runs. The best part, of course, is finishing it, and the satisfaction of knowing it was your longest run EVER!
Which Points Race was the hardest for you and why?  Also the WOOF. It was the longest run I've ever done, but I loved it!
Did you run any non-points races this year, and if so which was your favorite?  I always enjoy Fort for Fitness for the awesome neighborhood cheer sections, and the Chocolate Chase for, well, the chocolate.
Who is your favorite person or group to go for a run with?  My schedule is sort of unpredictable, so I usually run alone. I enjoy the solitude since my job is very people-oriented. I need the quiet. I enjoy drawing inspiration and support from other runners at racing events.
What do you enjoy most about distance running?  I love tackling a distance run, feeling tired and pushing through it. The confidence of knowing that I can push through a difficult situation transfers to everyday life. It burns calories (so I can afford to eat all the yummy after-party foods :-) and beats stress. I am a better, kinder, more patient person because I run.

Which Points Race did you enjoy the most and why?  Runners on Parade is always a good one! It's warm and the spectators are always awesome.
Which Points Race was the hardest for you and why?  Nutri Run of course! The weather is always so unpredictable and I am almost always under-trained.
Did you run any non-points races this year, and if so which was your favorite?  Chicago Half Marathon was my favorite.
Who is your favorite person or group to go for a run with?  My longest gal-pal to run with is Shellie Love! Along the way I have met so many great people to run with.
What do you enjoy most about distance running?  Finishing is the best!

Which Points Race did you enjoy the most and why?  My favorite Points Race was the Beethoven. I really enjoyed the course and I ran one of my best races that day. The weather was perfect and the shirts were very nice!
Which Points Race was the hardest for you and why?  The Mastodon Stomp was definitely the hardest Points Race for me. I had eaten black berries and several Sports Beans for breakfast prior to the race. It sounded like a good plan at the time.... however, around mile two, my stomach was about to explode. I leaned up against one of the buildings and Almost talked myself into not finishing. I was desperate to find the nearest restroom and somehow found one across the campus. After 10 minutes or so of severe stomach issues, I walked back outside in the wind and cold feeling absolutely miserable. In the distance, however, I saw my mom and decided I better try and finish. So, I eventually caught up with my mom and we finished the race together. I made a promise to myself to never eat blackberries and Sports beans Ever again!!!
Did you run any non-points races this year, and if so which was your favorite?  The Fort-4-Fitness race will always be one of my favorite half-marathon races. My husband and I said "I do" at mile seven three years ago at the Foster Park bridal glen.
Who is your favorite person or group to go for a run with?  My favorite people to run with is my husband Dave, my mom Barbie and my dear friends Kimberly and Cheryl.
What do you enjoy most about distance running?  What I enjoy most about distance running is often the new friends you make a long the way; the appreciation of nature on trail runs; and most of all, the feeling of accomplishment when a goal has been set and achieved. There's no greater feeling than that!
Barbie Scrogham 2017

Barbie Scrogham

Which Points Race did you enjoy the most and why?  I enjoyed the Three Rivers 5k Parade race the most because of the large number of people lined up on the streets who encouraged runners to finish the race.
Which Points Race was the hardest for you and why?  The hardest race for me was the 16 mile Woof Trail Race because I was in the middle of chemo and radiation treatment for cancer and was unsure I could complete the distance.
Did you run any non-points races this year, and if so which was your favorite?  My favorite non-points race was the Titanic 5k, 105th Anniversary Race in Ohio. It was a beautiful race along the river with my three best running buddies: my daughter Kim Martin and best friends Kimberly Richardson and Cheryl Stromski. We all placed and received ship awards.
Who is your favorite person or group to go for a run with?  My favorite running partner is my daughter Kim Martin. She is energetic, enthusiastic, and makes others feel good about running.
What do you enjoy most about distance running?  What I enjoy most about distance running is that I don't feel so pressured at the start. In long distance running there is more camaraderie and encouragement between runners.

Which Points Race did you enjoy the most and why?  Honestly, my favorite race was the Turkey Trot. A trail run in the pouring rain is a memorable way to end the race season.
Which Points Race was the hardest for you and why?  The Nutri-Run 20k is always challenging. It's tough to be prepared to run that distance so early in the year. And the weather is always up in the air.
Did you run any non-points races this year, and if so which was your favorite?  I ran a couple non-points races. I love the Chocolate Chase 5k; I also did the Galloping Gobbler on Thanksgiving Day. I also ran a 5k with my parents in Ohio this year. By far my favorite was the Fort4Fitness. I ran my first marathon at it this year and I honestly had a great time. The crowds are fantastic and everyone running is so supportive of one another.
Who is your favorite person or group to go for a run with?  Picking just one person is so hard. I love running with my kids (when I can drag them out to do it!) I will always tag along with someone on a run. You never know who's going to challenge you or who could use the encouragement and support of another runner.
What do you enjoy most about distance running?  Running is about so much more than staying in shape. It reminds me of how lucky I am to have a strong, healthy body. It gives me a place to clear my head. And it makes me feel a little less guilty about indulging in the occasional craft beer or two.

Which Points Race did you enjoy the most and why?  Looking back at the past year, I think I enjoyed the feeling of accomplishment after every single run. And having set the goal of participating in all of the Points Runs of 2017, I found myself looking forward to each and every one. I probably worried most about the WOOF simply because it was the greatest distance, but I really enjoyed the serenity of the woods and I loved seeing the buffalo!
Which Points Race was the hardest for you and why?  I was very afraid I would not be able to complete the Nutri-Run. I was not prepared mentally or physically for that distance so early in the year. Thankfully, the weather was beautiful, so I had no excuse but to keep moving forward. (And I'm so glad I did!)
Did you run any non-points races this year, and if so which was your favorite?  I always love participating in Fort 4 Fitness. It is a very well organized community event with a tremendously positive energy. It's fun to see the wide variety of types and abilities of runners (and walkers) who participate, all of whom are welcomed and encouraged by both other participants and F4F staff. Each year I look forward to the last water station -- and the traditional beer shots -- and there is absolutely nothing like running the final lap around Parkview Field baseball stadium.
Who is your favorite person or group to go for a run with?  I tend to go out running by myself much more than with other people. I can catch up on The Moth, Rachel Maddow newscasts, and other podcasts. It's also a great opportunity to clear my mind, de-stress, and reflect. Having said that, it is always so very wonderful to encounter the support system of the local running community... I'm not certain I would have continued running without the ongoing positivity of runners like Bev & Tim Murphy, Benita Browning, Cecil Baker, Liz Schloss, and Kris Lill. And it's always wonderful to return home to my biggest supporter, Laura Coon.
What do you enjoy most about distance running?  My ID bracelet says "I run to eat." This is the honest truth. When I start to come up with reasons why I shouldn't make the time to go walk or run, I remember how good it makes me feel, emotionally, mentally, & physically and what a powerful antidote to anxiety it can be. And I remind myself how much more I will be able to eat if I just go out and do it!

Which Points Race did you enjoy the most and why?  I felt like the WOOF was the race I enjoyed the most this year. I loved the challenge of it because it was a trail run.
Which Points Race was the hardest for you and why?  The most difficult points race that I did this year was the WOOF because it was the longest I have ever ran for a race. I also twisted by ankle badly going into the final loop, so I had to keep myself going physically and mentally during that last loop.
Did you run any non-points races this year, and if so which was your favorite?  I did not run any non-points races this year.
Who is your favorite person or group to go for a run with?  I have a group of women that I run with first thing in the morning during the week. I also run with my husband on occasions.
What do you enjoy most about distance running?  I love the challenge that long distance running offers both physically and mentally. I love the camaraderie between fellow runners during long distance races. I also love food too much, so long distance running keeps me fit.

Which Points Race did you enjoy the most and why?  Surprisingly (at least to those that know me), it was the WOOF. I am not graceful on trails and avoid them whenever possible. But after running the first loop of the WOOF conservatively, I felt more confident about the footing and really enjoyed the last two loops with nary a stumble.
Which Points Race was the hardest for you and why?  None. After an injury forced me to miss significant training last winter, I set the Ironrunner as a goal to get me back in running mode. Although all the races were much slower than previous years, I felt a sense of accomplishment to simply finish each one injury-free.
Did you run any non-points races this year, and if so which was your favorite?  Only one, Fort 4 Fitness Half Marathon...too warm to call it my favorite, however.
Who is your favorite person or group to go for a run with?  I always enjoy training with groups including the Wednesday night group at Three Rivers Running Company, the TRRC speed workouts during the summer, and the O'Sullivan's group on Tuesdays.
What do you enjoy most about distance running?  I've been running over four decades and my favorite aspect continues to be competing in races. Although I set all my 5K to half marathon PRs in the mid-1980s and can't come close to those times now, I still look forward to races because I enjoy the race atmosphere, regardless of outcome.

Which Points Race did you enjoy the most and why?  I liked Beat Beethoven the best because it was fun and different. It remains a challenge, I still haven't beat him!!
Which Points Race was the hardest for you and why?  The hardest race for me was the WOOF... it was and still remains a distance PR for me.
Did you run any non-points races this year, and if so which was your favorite?  I have run lots of non points races including the Chocolate Chase, Run Like a Hero 5k, Fort Wayne's smallest winner 10k, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Miracle Miles, Fort4fitness half marathon, Veterans Day 5k, YMCA turkey trot, Run 4the Heart at Sacred Heart School, and the Polar Dash New Years Day 4 miler...I liked the Smallest Winner 10k (the group is so positive and inspiring) and Fort4fitness.
Who is your favorite person or group to go for a run with?  I was able to train with Fleet Feet speed training group this summer and met some great people. I also love running with and completing the Fort Wayne Running Club's points races. I also love running with Sadie my dog.
What do you enjoy most about distance running?  I love the challenge that a new distance presents. It makes me proud to know that I've gone farther than I've ever thought possible for myself. Onward and upward...

Which Points Race did you enjoy the most and why?  I loved the Turkey Trot 5K this year! The course is a fun, scenic, trail run through Fox Island. This year though, there was ankle deep mud and water as well as a constant downpour of rain. I loved it! I felt like a kid again as I made sure to hit every puddle and run straight through the mud!
Which Points Race was the hardest for you and why?  The Vineyard Trail 5K by far was the hardest! Not only is it the hardest 5K I have ever done due to the rugged trails and hills, but it was also the week after I completed the Fort4Fitness Marathon. My body was dead before I even started.
Did you run any non-points races this year, and if so which was your favorite?  I did four non-point races this year. My favorite was the Girls On The Run 5K! I have a ten year old daughter who is starting to show an interest in running, and it made this dad proud to run along side of her during this 5K. She worked so hard and truly inspires me on a daily basis.
Who is your favorite person or group to go for a run with?  Years ago I started a Facebook group with a handful of runners called the "Fort Wayne Weekend Run Club" to find some similar paced friends to train with for my long runs. Today we have over 140 members and many of us get together on most weekends to knock out some miles. I have found some amazing friends through this group.
What do you enjoy most about distance running?  Distance running is my outlet. If I have feelings of stress or anxiety, running is what calms that and brings me peace. I converse with God through prayer in the quiet moments of a solo run, and I find joy in conversations with friends on group runs.

Which Points Race did you enjoy the most and why?  Runners on Parade 5k. Since I'm in the back, I get to see the leader pack come blasting back down the parade route on their way to the finish. And what a great crowd; fun, engaging, supportive.
Which Points Race was the hardest for you and why?  The River City Rat Race 10k. I just was not feeling it that day.
Did you run any non-points races this year, and if so which was your favorite?  The Race for the Warrior 10k. It was raining a lot of the time, but it was at the airport runway and there was beer and sandwiches afterwards.
Who is your favorite person or group to go for a run with?  I usually walk by myself, but at the events- Tina and Irwin Christie, Mike and Jenny Deal, Bonita Browning, Lisa Ramirez.
What do you enjoy most about distance running?  Enjoy is a strong word.

Which Points Race did you enjoy the most and why?  I really enjoyed the Parlor City Trot half marathon. The weather was perfect and the scenery was beautiful. My friends and I stayed as a group through this race and even stopped for pictures with the Bison, a lost cat on the trail and on the Bluffton river greenway a Bear carved out of a tree. How many times do you get to see a Bison, Cat and Bear when you run!
Which Points Race was the hardest for you and why?  My most difficult points race would have to be the Turkey Trot. The weather was miserable that day. One of my dear friends that somehow convinced me to do the Ironrunner to begin with was not feeling well that day. She was under going chemo and radiation treatments. We were taking longer than normal and at one point we were unable to locate the markers to know which way to go next. We somehow found our way to the finish all three of us hanging on together. As we were just about to cross the finish line I let go of Barb and I remember saying you got this. It was a very emotional moment and at that I point I learned what a true Ironrunner is. She was not going to let anything stop her from completing the Ironrunner.
Did you run any non-points races this year, and if so which was your favorite?  Yes, I ran the Titanic in Ohio. It was a beautiful day for a run. Some of the people were wearing life jackets and had arm floats on which was hilarious to see. We all placed in our age division that day. This was the first time I had ever placed in a race.
Who is your favorite person or group to go for a run with?  I would of never attempted to run if it was not for my brother. He loved every aspect of running and liked the competition and the fellowship of all the runners. My brother no longer runs but, his friends who are like family have taken me under their wings. Even though I am far from being a competitive runner they are always at the finish line cheering me on.
What do you enjoy most about distance running?  I enjoy the opportunity to see new places and spending time with friends. I have lived in Fort Wayne all my life and it was great to see how Fort Wayne has changed when participating in the local point races.

Which Points Race did you enjoy the most and why?  The WOOF. Despite the blisters on both feet and the frigid temps, this was the most challenging race I completed. It pushed me to do more and to accomplish something that I never thought that I could do. I remember crossing the finish line and crying because I never thought in a million years that I could accomplish anything close to that!
Which Points Race was the hardest for you and why?  The Nutri-Run. I completely under estimated the conditions of the race. It started out pretty cold, but quickly warmed up! The lack of water on the course was a big deal. I remember a little boy on the side of the road bringing bottles of water from his house and handing them out to some of the runners. He gave me one it took everything that I had not to chug every last drop! Those 12 miles felt like an eternity!
Did you run any non-points races this year, and if so which was your favorite?  Indy Mini! I have ran this race for the past three years and every year is better than the year before. The energy and encouragement that is imbedded in this race is unbelievable. I have laughed and cried during this race and look forward to the next year completing it!
Who is your favorite person or group to go for a run with?  My favorite person to run with is my husband, Matt Herald. He always knows when I need an extra push. He is my personal cheerleader! Most of the time he is far ahead of me, but I can always count on him at the finish line screaming at me to push through to finish strong. My second favorite is Belinda Clancy! She is one strong and amazing person, she has been there for me each and every time. When I can't go anymore I can alway count on her to know just what to say so that I don't give up and push through!
What do you enjoy most about distance running?  Enjoy? I am not sure that enjoy is the best word! Before I start it run, I think..what the heck am I doing this for! Once I get to mile 2, my mind has gone to another place and I think about every thing, whats for dinner, where are my kids, how far ahead of me is my husband, etc. Somewhere in the next mile I think of nothing, my mind is clear and I feel like I can accomplish anything. I am just a girl hitting the pavement with each foot, one at a time!

Which Points Race did you enjoy the most and why?  My favorite race during the 2017 Points Series was the Parlor City Half-Marathon. The course is beautiful and I enjoy running thru the State Park in Bluffton, Indiana. The race sponsors always host a great event, and the race takes place during a wonderful time of the year. it's just a beautiful running experience!
Which Points Race was the hardest for you and why?  My most difficult race was the Vineyard Trail 5K. I was struggling with a foot injury at the time (early October) and then I twisted my ankle in the first quarter mile of the race. I had to gut it out, and try my best to finish the race. The hilly terrain, and the trails made it very difficult to finish, but thankfully I was able to do so! The older I get, the faster races seem to be most difficult!
Did you run any non-points races this year, and if so which was your favorite?  The only races I competed in during the 2017 season were the 16 Fort Wayne Running Club Point Series Races.
Who is your favorite person or group to go for a run with?  I really enjoy running with Mike Slaubaugh. Dr. Slaubaugh teaches at Purdue University here in Fort Wayne. Mike and I competed in High School Cross-Country and Track, during the 1970's running boom. Although we did not know each other at the time, we are both familiar with many of the outstanding runners from that era. Mike amazes me with his knowledge of distance running, and the race history associated with high school running programs. That's why I call him "The Professor", his knowledge of running is endless! Mike and I try to get together during the winter months for Saturday morning runs with the BTR (Born to Run) running team. We are usually joined by Brett Hess, Matt Parker and Steve Leffers. I struggle to stay up with these guys on our runs, but we always have a great time, especially when we revisit the Glory Days!
What do you enjoy most about distance running?  Running is something that I have done since Elementary School. I was too small for most sports, and I had no speed, so naturally I grew to enjoy running longer distance because no one else wanted to run distances. I grew to like the sport, and it's continued to be a part of my life. Sometimes, I don't understand why I continue to enjoy it!
